Seraphim’s March 2 & 3 program will explore JOY in its many colors and depths in works of J.S. Bach, Coleridge-Taylor, Mendelssohn, Biebl, Duruflé, Parry, a new commission by Trevor Weston, and more. We have been through many challenges in recent years, with more to come. Yet JOY resurfaces from consolation growing into hope. Join us to CELEBRATE the JOY that sometimes emerges without reason, and in spite of reasons, that JOY is irrepressible and unmistakably human. We will present the composer of our featured commission, Trevor Weston, along with the lyricist Angelo Geter in a pre-concert forum at 7:30 pm on March 2. During the concert Geter will recite his poem "Praise" prior to performance of the new piece, which Dr. Weston has entitled "Lauda." We encourage you to take advantage of the plentiful parking available at the venue in West Roxbury and the opportunity to greet our honored guests following the concert. "Safety Last" will be this years’ annual silent movie event featuring Harold Lloyd in what’s generally considered his finest comedy. It’s boy gets girl but only after climbing the outside of a large office building in downtown Los Angeles. The difficulties are only overcome with Harold’s renowned and hilarious fixes to impossible situations. The church’s special Walker organ will be played by none other than Hollywood’s chosen Clark Wilson, master of silent movie accompaniment. Homemade soups and breads will be served starting at 5pm in the parish hall. Movie time is 7 pm.

Join us for a musical exploration of the stars and planets! Organist Peter Sykes will perform his transcription of Gustav Holst's orchestral suite The Planets. Between the movements of Holst's work choral pieces will illuminate a glorious journey through the heavens. Timothy Takach's Helios reflects on the Greek gods for which the planets are named. Jonathan Dove's Seek Him that Maketh the Seven Stars evokes awe for the divine maker of the stars. Robert Schumann's romantic An die Sterne longs for peace among the stars. Wie schön leuchtet die Morgenstern by Elliott Gyger for adult and children's choirs is a virtuosic hymn to joy and the sweetness of love, identifying Jesus as the "morning star" in a mystical wedding song. Also on the program is a newly commissioned work Starsby Patricia Van Ness on Sara Teasdale's poem of the same title. Gail Archer is an international concert organist, recording artist, choral conductor and lecturer. Dr. Archer is college organist at Vassar College, director of the music program at Barnard College where she conducts the Barnard-Columbia Chorus and Chamber Singers and a faculty member of Harriman Institute, Columbia University. According to The American Organist March 2023, "[She] should be commended for her commitment to [playing] music from beyond the well-worn path. ...This [concert] by an experienced and prolific artist deepens our understanding of [Ukrainian and Russian] music..." The Concert For Peace is dedicated to the people of Ukraine whose lives have been upended by war. Ms. Archer will play a program on St. John the Baptist historic Hook & Hastings Organ (1879) Opus 937 featuring the works of 20th century Ukrainian and Russian composers including Svitlana Strova, Tadeusz Machl, Alexander Glasunow and Cesar Chui among others. Join us in our fully assessable church on Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 PM followed by a reception in the church hall. This concert is supported in part by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council through our local Peabody Cultural Council.
